As Drought Worsens in Oklahoma, Bob Rodenberger Does Not See Herd Rebuilding Coming Soon

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

The market is good, Rodenberger said, but he is seeing a little bit of drawback in the fat market. The feeder market is still showing plenty of strength, he added.

“Getting a lot of calls about drought and how dry we are getting again,” Rodenberger said. “If you are south of the Red River, they are calling, needing to move calves, and needing to sell extra cows.”

Due to the drought situation, Rodenberger said he has seen runs of up to 400 cows at Apache in the past two weeks.

“Overall, our generalized run is less than a year ago, which is to be expected,” Rodenberger said. “We all expect that. The only reason it would be close to steady is I think we would be pulling calves forward…”

While producers are not in the same sentiment they were this time last year, Rodenberger said they are still being cautious. Oklahoma’s cow numbers are down, Rodenberger added, and he expects to see that trend carry on through next May.

“As far as rebuilding the herd yet, we are not seeing that in Oklahoma,” Rodenberger said.

Coming into December and January, Rodenberger said feedlots are preparing for less cattle availability.

Rodenberger said he does not expect too much change regarding runs in the next few weeks.
