Winter Wheat Planting Begins for Select States in This Week’s Crop Progress

Bouts of extreme heat in much of the Corn Belt are starting to have a bigger influence on crop condition ratings, USDA-NASS stated in its weekly Crop Progress report. The percentage of corn and soybean crops rated good to excellent dropped 2 to 3 percentage points on Tuesday’s report, which covered blistering hot days before the Labor Day holiday

In Oklahoma, Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.01 inches. According to the August 29th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 58 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 42 points from last year. Additionally, 36 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 63 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated very short to short and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to very short. There were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted reached 1 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average.

Corn dough reached 93 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average. Corn dented reached 67 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn mature reached 18 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans setting pods reached 95 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 16 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton setting bolls reached 94 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 32 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair, and 44 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Corn dough reached 95 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and normal. Corn dented reached 65 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but up 3 points from normal. Corn mature reached 25 percent, down 1 point from the previous year. Corn harvested for grain reached 15 percent. Corn conditions rated 75 percent good to excellent, 17 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 69 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 9 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed reached 79 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 12 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 34 percent, down 25 points from the previous year and down 21 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 7 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 9 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 86 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 67 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 4 points from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 5 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and normal. Soybean conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Peanuts pegging reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year and from normal. Peanuts mature reached 18 percent, down 10 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 96 percent good to excellent, 3 percent fair and 1 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 97 percent good to excellent and 3 percent fair. 

Cotton setting bolls reached 90 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 16 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 3 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 10 percent fair and 79 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 11 percent fair and 75 percent poor to very poor.

Hay: The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 95 percent. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 40 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 14 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 76 percent, down 18 points from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 18 percent, down 22 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 25 percent poor to very poor.

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 1 percent.

Corn dough was 95 percent, near 91 percent last year and 94 percent for the five-year average. Dented was 83 percent, ahead of 72 percent last year and 75 percent average. Mature was 39 percent, near 36 percent last year, and ahead of 28 percent average. Harvested was 6 percent, behind 15 percent last year, and equal to average. Corn conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans setting pods was 92 percent, ahead of 84 percent last year and 87 percent average. Dropping leaves was 19 percent, ahead of 12 percent last year and 11 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 25 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 40 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed was 90 percent, ahead of 85 percent last year, but near 93 percent average. Coloring was 51 percent, ahead of 40 percent last year, but near 53 percent average. Mature was 11 percent, ahead of 3 percent last year and 5 percent average. Harvested was 2 percent, near 1 percent last year. Cotton setting bolls was 93 percent, behind 100 percent last year, but near 92 percent average. Bolls opening was 37 percent, ahead of 27 percent last year and 19 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 46 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 47 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 22 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Corn dough reached 96 percent down 1 percentage point from the previous year and the average. Corn dented reached 86 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 3 points from the average. Corn mature reached 69 percent, down 6 percent from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 56 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and up 1 from the average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton setting bolls reached 92 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 2 from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 33 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton harvested reached 16 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 8 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. Sorghum harvested reached 67 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Soybeans setting pods reached 89 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and up 1 from the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 52 percent, down 16 points from the previous year and down 2 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor.
