Winter Wheat Plantings Along Average Pace in the Southern Plains

The U.S. corn harvest kicked off at a slightly ahead-of-average pace, according to USDA NASS’ weekly Crop Progress report released Monday. Winter wheat planting has begun in the Southern Plains- Oklahoma at 5 percent planted, Kansas at 4 percent planted, and Texas at 7 percent planted.

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.18 inches. According to the September 5th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 67 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 33 points from last year. Additionally, 43 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 54 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 7 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average.

Corn dough for the U.S reached 97 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Corn dented reached 82 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 4 from the average. Corn mature reached 34 percent, up 10 percentage points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Corn harvested reached 5 percent, even with the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Corn conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 18 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 31 percent, up 11 percentage points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton setting bolls reached 98 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 43 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Last week’s conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Winter wheat planted reached 5 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Corn dented reached 78 percent, down 3 points from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Corn mature reached 37 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Corn harvested for grain reached 25 percent. Corn conditions rated 73 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 75 percent good to excellent, 17 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed reached 89 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 48 percent, down 21 points from the previous year and down 17 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 18 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 5 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 2 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 93 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 76 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 10 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Soybean conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts mature reached 37 percent, down 2 points from the previous year but up 11 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 96 percent good to excellent, 3 percent fair and 1 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton setting bolls reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 30 percent, up 3 points from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 16 percent fair and 72 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 10 percent fair and 79 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 51 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 14 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 87 percent. The third cutting of other hay reached 24 percent, down 25 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 4 percent, near 3 percent for both last year and the five-year average.

Corn dented was 89 percent, ahead of 82 percent last year, and near 85 percent average. Mature was 56 percent, ahead of 48 percent last year and 42 percent average. Harvested was 17 percent, near 20 percent last year, but ahead of 10 percent average. Corn conditions were rated 31 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans setting pods was 95 percent, ahead of 90 percent last year, and near 92 percent average. Dropping leaves was 37 percent, ahead of 25 percent last year and 19 percent average. Harvested was 1 percent. Soybean conditions rated 23 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 25 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 40 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed was 95 percent, near 91 percent last year and 97 percent average. Coloring was 68 percent, ahead of 56 percent last year, but near 69 percent average. Mature was 22 percent, ahead of 10 percent last year and 11 percent average. Harvested was 4 percent, near 2 percent last year and 1 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions were rated 36 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 29 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton setting bolls was 97 percent, near 100 percent last year, and 95 percent average. Bolls opening was 58 percent, well ahead of 36 percent last year and 26 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 40 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair, and 19 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 46 percent fair, and 13 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 47 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Corn dented reached 93 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 percentage point from the five-year average. Corn mature reached 73 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and even with the average. Corn harvested reached 62 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 1 from the average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton setting bolls reached 98 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 41 percent, down 8 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Cotton harvested reached 19 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 5 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts mature reached 20 percent, even with the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Peanut conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum coloring reached 93 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Sorghum mature reached 81 percent, down 6 percent from the previous year and even with the average. Sorghum harvested reached 71 percent, down 2 percent from the previous year and down 1 percent from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair, and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans setting pods reached 93 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and even with the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 63 percent, down 14 points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Soybean conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 32 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. 

Winter wheat planted reached 7 percent, down 8 points from the previous year and even with the average.
