First Fall Freeze and Possible Snow?

This week, we have seen some cooler temps and much-needed rain across the state, but the first fall freeze may not be far off. State Climatologist Gary McManus says we may see some snow for Halloween, “We’re still forecasting our first snow for Halloween, and our average first freeze is still a month or two away, depending on where you live.”

Most of the state looks to get its first freeze in November, but some portions of the state may see freezing temps as early as October 17th! But McManus says right now we aren’t talking about snow, we are talking about the falling rain across portions of the state, “We have gotten some very well-placed rains overnight into the morning. Take a look at the new Drought Monitor map this morning, especially south central Oklahoma, and where those rains fell.”

McManus says over the last five days, due to our recent weather pattern reset, “Everybody’s gotten SOME rain, but most haven’t gotten nearly enough. Kudos to NW OK and now parts of SC OK, however. Forecasts indicate there’s still a chance for significant totals, but not drought-busting totals, across western OK.”

While this rain has been a welcome sight, if you did happen to miss out on it, McManus says there’s another chance of rain in next week’s forecast as well, “The precise areas for heavier rain chances will shift around a bit, but at least they’re around at all.”
