Southern Plains Wheat Plantings Run Behind Last Year’s Pace

Both the corn and soybean harvests are running slightly ahead of the average pace, according to USDA NASS’ weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.

In Oklahoma, rainfall averaged 1.26 inches. According to the September 12th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 62 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 38 points from last year. Additionally, 45 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 52 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 15 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average.

Corn dented for the U.S. reached 90 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Corn mature reached 54 percent, up 16 points from the previous year and up 10 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 9 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Corn conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 54 percent, up 15 percentage points from the previous year and up 11 points from the average. Soybeans harvested reached 5 percent, up 2 percent from the previous year and up 1 percent from the average. Soybean conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 55 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Cotton harvested reached 9 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Winter wheat planted reached 12 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Corn dented reached 88 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Corn mature reached 53 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. Corn harvested for grain reached 30 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and up 14 points from normal. Corn conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated  73 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 3 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 65 percent, down 18 points from the previous year and down 14 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 24 percent, down 10 points from the previous year and down 12 points from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 7 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans blooming reached 97 percent. Soybeans setting pods reached 84 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 26 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 9 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Peanuts mature reached 43 percent, down 6 points from the previous year but up 7 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 96 percent good to excellent and 4 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated 96 percent good to excellent, 3 percent fair and 1 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton bolls opening reached 45 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 70 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 16 percent fair and 72 percent poor to very poor.

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 60 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 14 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 92 percent. The third cutting of other hay reached 32 percent, down 28 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 22 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 8 percent, behind 13 percent last year, and near 10 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 1 percent, equal to average.

Corn dented was 96 percent, ahead of 89 percent last year, and near 92 percent average. Mature was 76 percent, ahead of 59 percent last year and 58 percent average. Harvested was 27 percent, near 26 percent last year, and ahead of 17 percent average. Corn conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans dropping leaves was 53 percent, ahead of 38 percent last year, and well ahead of 32 percent average. Harvested was 4 percent, near 2 percent last year and 1 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 23 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 47 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 23 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum coloring was 80 percent, ahead of 71 percent last year, but near 82 percent average. Mature was 34 percent, ahead of 19 percent last year and 22 percent average. Harvested was 7 percent, ahead of 2 percent both last year and average. Sorghum conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton bolls opening was 81 percent, well ahead of 52 percent last year and 38 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 47 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 40 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair, and 19 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 50 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 15 percent, down 16 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the average.

Corn dented reached 97 percent, even with the previous year and the average. Corn mature reached 82 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 68 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 52 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Cotton harvested reached 20 percent, even with the previous year and up 2 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum coloring reached 96 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Sorghum mature reached 85 percent, down 7 percent from the previous year and even with the average. Sorghum harvested reached 75 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Peanut conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair, and 37 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 7 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 71 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 6 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 72 percent poor to very poor.
