Southern Plains Winter Wheat Plantings Remain Behind Last Year and Five-Year Average

SOUTHERN PLAINS WINTER WHEAT:

In Oklahoma, Winter wheat planted reached 18 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 7 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 5 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 2 points from the average.

In Kansas, Winter wheat planted was 18 percent, equal to last year, and near 22 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 4 percent, near 3 percent last year, and 5 percent average.

In Texas, Winter wheat planted reached 30 percent, down 12 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 12 percent, even with the previous year and up 6 points from the average.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 26 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and down 3 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 7 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and up 1 from the average.

Corn dented reached 95 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 from the five-year average. Corn mature reached 70 percent, up 15 points from the previous year and up 10 from the average. Corn harvested reached 15 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 73 percent, up 13 percentage points from the previous year and up 11 points from the five-year average. Soybeans harvested reached 12 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Soybean conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton bolls opening reached 65 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 3 from the five-year average. Cotton harvested reached 13 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

In Oklahoma, Rainfall totals averaged 1.61 inches. According to the September 19th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 72 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 28 points from last year. Additionally, 49 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 50 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the mid to upper 70’s.

Winter wheat planted reached 18 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 7 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 5 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 2 points from normal.

Corn dented reached 96 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Corn mature reached 70 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and from normal. Corn harvested for grain reached 30 points, down 1 point from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Corn conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum coloring reached 72 percent, down 16 points from the previous year and from normal. Sorghum mature reached 33 percent, down 17 points from the previous year and down 15 points from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 11 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans setting pods reached 87 percent, unchanged from the previous year and from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 32 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 6 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor.

Peanuts mature reached 56 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 11 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 97 percent good to excellent and 3 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated 96 percent good to excellent and 4 percent fair.

Cotton bolls opening reached 55 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 3 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 70 percent poor to very poor.

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 68 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 11 points from normal. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 8 percent, down 3 points from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 95 percent. The third cutting of other hay reached 39 percent down 26 points from the previous year and down 6 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 9 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 38 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 22 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor.

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 18 percent, equal to last year, and near 22 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 4 percent, near 3 percent last year and 5 percent average.

Corn mature was 87 percent, ahead of 70 percent last year and 74 percent average. Harvested was 38 percent, near 34 percent last year, and ahead of 29 percent average. Corn conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans dropping leaves was 68 percent, ahead of 51 percent last year and 49 percent average. Harvested was 11 percent, near 8 percent last year, and ahead of 4 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 23 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum coloring was 90 percent, ahead of 83 percent last year, and equal to average. Mature was 45 percent, ahead of 32 percent last year and 36 percent average. Harvested was 11 percent, ahead of 4 percent last year and 5 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated  32 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton bolls opening was 89 percent, well ahead of 60 percent last year and 49 percent average. Harvested was 1 percent, near 2 percent last year, and equal to average. Cotton conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 23 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 47 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 13 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 51 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 50 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 30 percent, down 12 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 12 percent, even with the previous year and up 6 points from the average.

Corn mature reached 88 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Corn harvested reached 73 percent, up 2 percent from the previous year and the average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 59 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 4 from the average. Cotton harvested reached 24 percent, even with the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Peanuts mature reached 32 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and up 4 from the average.  Peanut conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair, and 37 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum mature reached 91 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Sorghum harvested reached 80 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and even with the average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 83 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Soybeans harvested reached 40 percent, up 10 points from the previous year and down 10 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 28 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 7 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 69 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 7 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 71 percent poor to very poor.
