Oklahoma Winter Wheat Plantings Noticeably Behind Five-Year Average

SOUTHERN PLAINS WHEAT PLANTINGS:

In Oklahoma, Winter wheat planted reached 27 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 11 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 10 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but down 1 point from normal.

In Kansas, Winter wheat planted was 37 percent, ahead of 28 percent last year, but near 38 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 14 percent, ahead of 6 percent last year, but near 15 percent average.

In Texas, Winter wheat planted reached 45 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 13 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and even with the average.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 40 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and down 3 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 15 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and down 1 point from the average.

Corn maturity reached 82 percent, up 9 percentage points from the previous year and up 7 points from the five-year average. Corn harvested reached 23 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 86 percent, up 8 percentage points from the previous year and up 9 points from the five-year average. Soybeans harvested reached 23 percent, up 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Soybean conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. Cotton bolls opening reached 75 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Cotton harvested reached 18 percent, down 3 percent from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.06 inches. According to the September 26th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 66 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 34 points from last year. Additionally, 47 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 53 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 70’s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated short to very short and subsoil moisture conditions were rated very short to short and adequate. There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Cotton bolls opening reached 78 percent, down 4 points from the previous year but up 7 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 63 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 75 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 10 points from normal. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 15 percent, down 4 points from the previous year but up 5 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 45 percent, down 29 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 9 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 35 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 38 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 37 percent, ahead of 28 percent last year, but near 38 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 14 percent, ahead of 6 percent last year, but near 15 percent average.

Corn mature was 93 percent, ahead of 81 percent last year and 85 percent average. Harvested was 51 percent, near 48 percent last year, and ahead of 42 percent average. Corn conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans dropping leaves was 79 percent, ahead of 66 percent last year and 65 percent average. Harvested was 24 percent, ahead of 18 percent last year and 11 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 18 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 50 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 49 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum coloring was 94 percent, near 91 percent last year and 95 percent average. Mature was 60 percent, ahead of 50 percent last year and 54 percent average. Harvested was 19 percent, ahead of 9 percent last year and 11 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton bolls opening was 91 percent, ahead of 74 percent last year, and well ahead of 63 percent average. Harvested was 5 percent, near 6 percent last year and 2 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 42 percent fair, and 23 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 23 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 45 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 13 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and even with the average.

Corn matured reached 91 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average. Corn harvested reached 78 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same. 

Cotton bolls opening reached 68 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and up 1 from the average. Cotton harvested reached 28 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 4 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts mature reached 40 percent, even with the previous year and up 5 percentage points from the five-year average.
