Bob Rodenberger says Lighter Runs This Week as Producers Focus on Wheat Plantings

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger said runs this week were lighter.

“The rain slowed down some people,” Rodenberger said. “Everybody is in farming mode. This happens every October; there is nothing new about this.”

Based on the lack of water in ponds and lack of hay for the winter, Rodenberger said he is still seeing a decent number of cows come through.

There is still demand for beef, Rodenberger said, but there is less disposable income for consumers because of inflation.

“I read an article this morning that sales of chicken have gone up drastically versus pork and beef,” Rodenberger said.

Regarding the possible government shutdown in the future, Rodenberger said there is no consistent pattern to follow based on past events to say whether the market will break to the upside or downside.

“I don’t think there is anything to predict,” Rodenberger said. “It is something to worry about. The worst thing is, if they shut down, all of our government programs are going to be on stall. It doesn’t mean they are not going to install them back, but if you are trying to enroll in something or if you are trying to do your LRP, that will be non-existent until they open the government back.”
