Livestock Risk Services Helping Producers Take Advantage of LRP

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Dakota Moss about Livestock Risk Protection

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays is talking with Dakota Moss of Livestock Risk Services about Livestock Risk Protection for cattle producers. Livestock Risk Services has recently been added to the National Family of livestock-related businesses.

Livestock Risk Protection is a nationwide price protection offered by USDA, Moss said, and is built for any size of operation.

“It is basically ensuring against the market on any number of head from one calf all the way to 12,000 head,” Moss said.

LRP can be a useful tool for producers, Moss said, whether they are locking in a margin on their stockers, or if they are a cow-calf producer looking at ensuring high prices.

“Especially with the political environment we are in, we have more uncertainty nowadays than we ever have before, so having that plan in place and protecting the marketing plan and the business plan at the LRP- there is an incredible opportunity to capture with that program right now,” Moss said.

When a producer locks in their price with LRP, Moss said one advantage is that the producer is able to see the potential return. Moss added that LRP does not cost producers anything upfront.

“If this thing goes through the roof, the topside is wide open…,” Moss said.

On the other hand, Moss said if the market goes backward, producers who have LRP are protected at the price they have locked in.
