Winter Wheat Emerging in the Southern Plains Down from Five-Year Average

SOUTHERN PLAINS WINTER WHEAT:

In Oklahoma, winter wheat planted reached 64 percent, up 13 points from the previous year and up 1 point from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 31 percent, up 2 points from the previous year but down 12 points from normal.

In Kansas, winter wheat planted was 70 percent, ahead of 62 percent last year, and near 68 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 38 percent, ahead of 31 percent last year, but behind 43 percent average.

In Texas, winter wheat planted reached 62 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 35 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average.

U.S CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 68 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 39 percent, up 3 percentage points from the previous year and down 4 points from the average.

Corn maturity reached 95 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 45 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 percentage points from the average. Corn conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans dropping leaves rated 97 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 4 percentage points from the five-year average. Soybeans harvested reached 62 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 10 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton bolls opening reached 87 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and the five-year average. Cotton harvested reached 33 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair, and 41 percent poor to very poor. 

OKLAHOMA:

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.03 inches. According to the October 10th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 63 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 37 points from last year. Additionally, 43 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 57 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.

Sorghum coloring reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Sorghum mature reached 85 percent, down 3 points from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 42 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 1 point from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 42 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 65 percent, down 4 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Soybeans harvested reached 23 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Soybean conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 66 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor.

Peanuts mature reached 72 percent, down 11 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Peanuts harvested reached 19 percent, up 5 points from the previous year but down 4 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 90 percent, down 2 points from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Central Oklahoma cotton harvest has begun in some areas. Cotton harvested reached 12 percent, up 6 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Cotton conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 56 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 91 percent, down 3 points from the previous year. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 25 percent, down 6 points from the previous year but up 8 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 61 percent, down 28 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 60 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 67 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor.

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 70 percent, ahead of 62 percent last year, and near 68 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 38 percent, ahead of 31 percent last year, but behind 43 percent average.

Corn harvested was 72 percent, near 71 percent last year, and ahead of 66 percent average.

Sorghum mature was 87 percent, ahead of 81 percent last year, and near 84 percent average. Harvested was 39 percent, near 37 percent last year, and ahead of 32 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton bolls opening was 96 percent, ahead of 87 percent last year and 85 percent average. Harvested was 17 percent, behind 25 percent last year, but ahead of 7 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair and 22 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 39 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 22 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 53 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 53 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 62 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 35 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average.

Corn matured reached 99 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average. Corn harvested reached 86 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 from the average.  Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 82 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Cotton harvested reached 37 percent, down 2 percent from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 15 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor.

Peanuts matured reached 60 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 8 points from the average. Peanuts harvested reached 20 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Peanut conditions rated 38 percent good to excellent, 53 percent fair and 9 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 39 percent good to excellent, 45 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum harvested reached 92 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and up 2 from the five-year average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 96 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Soybeans harvested reached 68 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and down 4 points from the average.
