OK Pork Council Celebrates Pork Month and Prepares for Give-A-Ham Campaign

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Kylee Deniz about Pork Month and the annual Give-A-Ham campaign.

To celebrate National Pork Month on October 24, a free Prairie Fresh pork lunch was served, courtesy of the Made in Oklahoma Coalition, Oklahoma Pork Council, Head Country, and Homeland Stores. Following the lunch, Farm Director, KC Sheperd had the chance to visit with Kylee Deniz, the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Pork Council.

Deniz first commented on the sweepstakes winner, who won a seven-minute shopping spree of Made in Oklahoma products in Homeland.

“We watched a woman, for seven minutes, go through the store and grab as many Made in Oklahoma products as she could get, and she got a lot of pork, which we are thrilled about,” Deniz said. “She grabbed the Prairie Fresh pork, which is produced by Seaboard.”

As the holiday season is near, the Oklahoma Pork Council will be kicking off the Give-A-Ham Campaign on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

OSU President Dr. Kayse Shurm Giving a Ham

Every year on Giving Tuesday, Oklahoma’s Give-A-Ham campaign launches with a challenge from the Oklahoma Pork Council Board of Directors President. This starts the coordinated holiday season giving effort, and through the involvement of various individuals and local donations an impact is made in Oklahoma.

“It is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, so it is coming quickly,” Deniz said.

At the end of the campaign, Deniz expects to have hundreds of hams given.

“We have had people come forward with monetary donations as well, so there will be cash given,” Deniz said. “This year, one of the things we are excited about, at least our board is, more on the service side. We anticipate doing some breakfasts, free lunches and all kinds of things for communities where pigs are, but then also for Tulsa, Oklahoma City and everywhere in between.”
