Oklahoma’s Winter Wheat Conditions See Improvements in Conditions in Last Crop Progress of 2023

This publication is the last weekly Crop Progress report issued for the 2023 season. The first weekly report will be released on Monday, April 1, 2024.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Corn harvested for the U.S. reached 96 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 from the five-year average.

Cotton harvested reached 83 percent, even with the previous year, and up 4 percentage points from the five-year average.

Winter wheat emerged reached 91 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Winter wheat emerged reached 94 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 44 percent good to excellent, 45 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum harvested for grain reached 96 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 1 point from normal.

Soybeans harvested reached 81 percent, down 8 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Cotton harvested reached 84 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 6 points from normal.

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 60 percent, down 9 points from the previous year but up 24 points from normal. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 50 percent, down 14 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Pasture and range conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 42 percent fair and 28 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor.

KANSAS:

Winter wheat emerged was 93 percent, ahead of 86 percent last year, and near 90 percent for the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 32 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 33 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 32 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton harvested was 80 percent, behind 90 percent last year, but ahead of 63 percent average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 54 percent poor to very poor.

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 92 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 78 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton harvested reached 74 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average.

Range and pasture conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 58 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 16 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor.
