Western States National Hereford Show Champions Selected

Herefords raised the stakes in Reno, Nev., Dec. 1-2, 2023, for the Western States National Hereford Show. Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, and Paige Lemenager, Hudson, Ill., played their cards right and topped the horned show, while Brumley Farms, Orovada, Nev., and Cruz Colyer, Bruneau, Idaho, had winning hands and claimed top honors in
the polled show. Judge Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla., sorted through 145 head of Hereford cattle to find his champions.


Bull show winners
The grand champion horned bull banner went to C CJC 4264 Advance 3125 ET, exhibited by Colyer Herefords. The winning entry and champion junior bull calf is a Jan. 10, 2023, son of ECR 628 Advance 9490 ET. Taking reserve champion horned bull honors with their champion yearling was Weimer Cattle Co., Susanville, Calif., with TCW Historic 81E 201K, a
Feb. 25, 2022, son of NJW 160B 028X Historic 81E ET. In the polled show, Stellpflug Gunsmoke 222 ET, a Feb. 11, 2022, son of JDH AH Benton 8G ET, exhibited by Brumley Farms, claimed the grand champion bull title. He was also named champion yearling bull. Taking reserve champion polled bull honors was Colyer Herefords, with C 1311 Maker 3210 ET. Their entry is a Feb. 4, 2023, son of Green JCS Makers Mark 229G ET, that first won the junior bull calf division.

Female show winners
Taking grand champion horned female honors was Paige Lemenager, with KJ TWJ 907E Martini 936K ET, an Oct. 5, 2022, daughter of KLD RW Marksman D87 ET. Lemanager’s entry also won the senior heifer calf division. GOHR Fashionista 2012, shown by Fallon and Gunnar Gohr, Madras, Ore., was named the reserve champion horned female and champion junior yearling. GOHR Fashionista 2012 is a Feb. 10, 2022, daughter of GOHR 0245 Payday 6026. Winning the grand champion polled female banner and spring heifer calf division was Cruz Colyer, with PSC NCC Gaia 3008 ET, a March 2, 2023, daughter of CH High Roller 756 ET. Following with reserve polled female honors were Hadley and Hannah Harrison, Montague, Calif., with HL MCKY Monroe 2206 ET, a March 10, 2022, daughter of CH High Roller 756
ET. The female was also named champion spring yearling.


Other show winners
After the selection of champions, William Cox, Pomeroy, Wash., was named horned premier exhibitor, and Cache Cattle Co., Wellsville, Utah, was named polled premier exhibitor. Horned premier breeder honors went to Colyer Herefords, and Cache Cattle Co. also claimed the polled premier breeder title. Gene and Cindy Stillahn, Cheyenne, Wyo., exhibited the best six head and the get of sire winner, sired by Churchill Big Jake 0265H ET.

Support for Hereford youth
Three National Junior Hereford Association members were honored with scholarships on Dec. 1, 2023, at the Western States Hereford Sale, held in conjunction with the Western States National Hereford Show. Lydia Shaw, Caldwell, Idaho, received the $2,000 John Ascuaga Memorial Scholarship. The $2,000 Willard Wolf Scholarship recipient was Raney Anderson, Canyon City, Ore., and Carly Wheeler, Templeton, Calif., received the $2,000 Western States Hereford Scholarship. Additionally, Lot 2, BF 8029 2020 Barbara 342L, a Feb. 18, 2023, daughter of SR Rio Bravo 8029 ET, consigned by Brumley Farms, topped the Western States Hereford Sale. Chapman Land and Cattle, Nunnelly, Tenn., bought the female for $40,000, with 50% of the proceeds going to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America to support leadership and education for Hereford youth.
