Cattle Markets Higher than 45 Days Ago, says Bob Rodenberger

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

Farm Director KC Sheperd is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger said the weather did not impact the markets this week at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, but it did impact the numbers moving through.

“We got eight to ten inches of snow between Carnegie and Apache,” Rodenberger said. “They got way more snow than we got up in this country.”

As a whole, Rodenberger, the entire cattle market is higher than it was 45 days ago.

“Salvage value on cows is as high as I have ever seen it, so if you have got cows that you need to cull, you need to be looking at getting rid of them,” Rodenberger said. “This would be the extreme high, but you have got a 1500-pound cow that was open, and you turned her out on wheat and got her back in shape; they bring from $1.00 to $1.15 per pound. I bet those cows, when they bought them, didn’t cost that much per head.”

In general, Rodenberger said many producers are still needing a little bit more rain to fill up ponds completely.

“We need some pond water for everything to be just perfect,” Rodenberger said.
