Passport Tips & Tricks

Calling all Oklahomans! If you’re planning to travel internationally this year, the first item on your checklist should be your passport. The United States Department of State faced significant backlogs and delays in passport processing in 2023, leaving many travelers frustrated. In the new year, it is time to plan ahead so that you aren’t left stranded. My office is here to guide you through the confusing process of the passport system with some tips and best practices.

Before you plan your trip outside the country, take a moment to check your passport’s expiration date. If it’s nearing expiration, or within six months of your travel date, set aside time to apply for a renewal. To be allowed entry in most countries, your passport cannot expire within 6 months of arrival. While the processing time has improved for new passports and renewals, the standard waiting time is still 6-8 weeks on average. The expedited version is available at an additional cost of $60, generally reducing the waiting time to 2-3 weeks.

When applying for your passport renewal, stay informed about the processing times. The State Department’s website (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/processing-times.html)  provides real-time updates on routine and expedited processing. This can save you both time and stress.

In the event of an emergency or urgent circumstances, don’t panic. You can call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment in person before your trip. Be mindful that these appointments are limited, so act swiftly. NPIC is also your go-to for updating applications or upgrading processing – they are there to assist you. While we can’t guarantee a certain outcome, my office is committed to helping you navigate the passport process. If you encounter any issues or have questions, feel free to contact us at 405-300-6890 or submit a required privacy release form online here: https://bice.house.gov/services/help-federal-agency. We can reach out to the department on your behalf and provide you with a status update. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time applicant, proper planning and attention to detail will help you obtain or renew your passport smoothly. Safe travels!
