Ben Hale Says Recent Cattle on Feed Report Contributed to Lower Cattle Prices This Week

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Ben Hale about the latest in the cattle markets.

On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions is located in Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Comanche.

After USDA released the Cattle on Feed Report last Friday, Hale said cattle prices have been lower. The marketings were good, Hale added, but the placements were high.

“We had 6800 yesterday compared to about 6050 a year ago, and they kind of called the feeders 2.00 to 4.00 lower, in some spots those heifers a little bit more,” Hale said. “The calves are not as low, but probably some of the bigger six-weight yearling steers and heifers and on up to seven (weights) that were thin enough to go to grass probably would have been significantly cheaper. Lots of players out on them yesterday.”

Hale said the sale barn Commanche would have a lighter run on Wednesday the 26th, but this is seasonal to be softer this time of year.

“There is still lots of grazing around, and we are still getting some rains, so there is no need to move them right now, and just kind of ride this market out a little bit,” Hale said.

Hale can be contacted at 940-631-2333.
