Oklahoma and Kansas See Big Declines in Winter Wheat Conditions This Week

U.S. Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 17 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 4 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 55 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor. Ratings are still up from this time last year, which was 26 percent good to excellent, 33 percent poor and 41 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 12 percent, even with the previous year and up 2 percentage points from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 3 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and the average.

Cotton planted reached 11 percent, even with the previous year and the five-year average.

Soybeans planted reached 8 percent, even with the previous year and up 4 percentage points from the five-year average.  

Sorghum planted reached 17 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 percentage point from the five-year average.

Oklahoma Crop Progress:

Winter wheat jointing reached 83 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 2 points from normal. Winter wheat headed reached 30 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and up 10 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 60 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 10 poor to very poor. Conditions are still looking much better than this time last year as the 2023 crop was historically bad by this point in April– the crop was only 6 percent in good condition and 63% poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 34 percent, up 8 percentage points from the previous year and up 10 points from the five-year average.

Livestock conditions rated 70 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 6 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, pasture and range conditions for Oklahoma rated 13 percent good to excellent.

Kansas Crop Progress:

Winter wheat jointed was 72 percent, well ahead of 41 percent last year and 48 percent for the five-year average. Headed was 4 percent, near 2 percent last year and the 1 percent average. Winter wheat conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 43 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair, and 19 percent poor to very poor.  The 2023 crop was much worse than what we are dealing with this year with the 2023 good to excellent a year ago was 14% good to excellent.

Corn planted was 26 percent, near 22 percent last year and ahead of the 18 percent average. Corn emerged was 3 percent, near 2 percent last year and the 1 percent average.

Soybeans planted was 6 percent, near 3 percent last year and ahead of the 1 percent average.

Sorghum planted was 1 percent.

Texas Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 66 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor. A year ago- the Texas wheat crop was 14% good to excellent.

Corn planted reached 68 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 55 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum planted reached 60 percent, even with the previous year and the five-year average. Sorghum emerged reached 6 percent, down 2 points from the average.

Cotton planted reached 16 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the five-year average.

Range and pasture conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 40 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 25 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor.
