During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report are spotlighting the 18 Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA, who are among the highest achievers in the organization.
The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness, and Star in Agricultural Production.
This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agricultural Production in 2024.
One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 98th Oklahoma State FFA Convention, which will take place on May 7th and 8th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
This week, our coverage of the 2024 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists continues with Agricultural Production competitor Ashlee Purvine of the Thomas-Fay-Custer FFA chapter representing the Southwest Area.
“My Supervised Agricultural Experience consists of my show projects,” Purvine said.
Purvine’s project includes 44 cows, 21 of which are registered, 2 registered Simmental herd bulls, and an embryo enterprise consisting of 51 frozen embryos from two donor cows.
“My operation kind of started as just a group of retired show heifers, but it has quickly grown into a large foundation of Simmental and Angus genetics that I will continue to utilize for the rest of my life,” Purvine said.
Because genetics play a large role in her project, Purvine said her focus on producing top-quality cattle is critical.
“Not just trying to find a great phenotypical bull to use on cows, but also trying to find a bull that has great EPDs and has the kind of numbers that a commercial producer would like to use,” Purvine said. “My true goal with my operation is to increase the interest in the Simmental breed for commercial producers.”
Purvine plans to expand her operation throughout the years and one day market elite show heifer prospects, embryos, and Simmental bull semen in online sales.
