The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) flagship Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Originally established in 1985 to control soil erosion and stabilize commodity prices, the program has evolved to provide numerous benefits for both conservation and the economy. Now, let’s take a look at the 2025 CRP Enrollment for Land Conservation.

2025 Enrollment Highlights

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) recently announced the successful enrollment for 2025, bringing the total number of acres accepted into the program. This includes offers through various sign-up options, such as general, continuous, grassland, and the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). With this latest sign-up, the total number of acres currently enrolled in CRP stands at 25.8 million.

FSA Administrator Bill Beam commented on the enrollment, stating, “What better way to celebrate CRP’s 40th anniversary and mark four decades of voluntary private lands stewardship than to announce an extremely successful 2025 enrollment for CRP’s many program options.”

Program Competitiveness and Acreage

The enrollment process was highly competitive, as the program’s total acreage is capped at 27 million acres for the fiscal year 2025. After accounting for expiring contracts and administrative reserves, only about 1.8 million acres were available for enrollment this year. The FSA received offers on more than 2.6 million acres in total.

  • Approximately 955,795 acres are set to expire on September 30, 2025.
  • Producers submitted offers to re-enroll just over 624,000 acres of expiring land.
  • New land enrollment offers totaled just under 2 million acres.

Kansas, South Dakota, and Colorado were the top three states for CRP acreage acceptance in 2025. The American Relief Act, 2025, extended provisions for CRP through September 30, 2025.

According to FSA, Oklahoma had 719,904 acres enrolled in CRP (all sign-ups) at the end of April 2025.

As of April 2025, Kansas has 2,039,000 enrolled, and Texas has 2,209,000 acres in CRP. To learn more about the 2025 CRP Enrollment for Land Conservation, visit USDA.GOV
