Oklahoma Weather Forecast: Much-Needed Rain and Cooler Temps Arriving This Week

Oklahoma is set to trade its recent stretch of summer-like warmth for some much-needed rainfall and cooler, more seasonable temperatures as a significant storm system approaches the state midweek.

A “Glorious” But False Fall

Oklahomans have been enjoying exceptionally pleasant weather, a period State Climatologist Gary McManus describes as a “glorious stretch of fall weather.” However, he cautions that this taste of autumn is about to be replaced by a more turbulent pattern.

“Enjoy the next two days of light-jacket weather in the mornings and shorts in the afternoons,” McManus advised. “Because after that, real fall looks to intrude, and with it comes some decent chances for rain.”

A Critical Time for Rain

The incoming storm system, expected to arrive late Tuesday and intensify through Wednesday and Thursday, is a welcome sight for many, particularly in the agricultural sector. The state has been experiencing abnormally dry conditions, and this rainfall is crucial.

“We need the moisture to stave off flash drought and to get the winter wheat crop up and going,” McManus stated. “This is a critical time for the wheat.”

Current forecasts predict the heaviest rainfall in the southeastern parts of the state, with totals possibly reaching 2-3 inches. However, most of Oklahoma can expect to see beneficial moisture. “Most of the state looks to get at least a half-inch to an inch, which would be fantastic,” McManus added, emphasizing the importance of every drop to combat the expanding dryness.Image of the 7-day rainfall forecast map for Oklahoma

A Return to “Real Fall”

Following the rain, a noticeable drop in temperature is expected to usher in conditions that feel more like late October. The pleasant 80-degree days will be replaced by cooler highs.

“The good news is that after the rain comes the ‘real’ fall weather,” McManus explained. “We’ll go from the 80s to the 60s for highs, which is right where we should be for this time of year.”

While the forecast brings a welcome change, McManus notes that the extended outlook remains uncertain, with possibilities of both warmer and cooler weather patterns emerging as the state moves deeper into autumn. For now, the focus is on the incoming system and the vital moisture it promises.
