Bob Rodenberger Says No Herd Rebuilding Yet as Producers Are Still Pulling Cattle Forward to Sell

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest on the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

“The feeder market is still showing some softness,” Rodenberger said. “A lot of it is just lack of numbers. Not a lot of feeders are moving this time of year.”

The calf market has picked up some action this week, Rodenberger said, but it is still softer than it was three weeks ago. Things are looking up this week, Rodenberger said, but Oklahoma producers are still in need of some timely rains not only for pasture but for the wheat crop as well.

“Yesterday, we had 500 cows,” Rodenberger said. “You don’t normally have that many cows in a normal season.”

Rodenberger said it is going to be a while before the cow herd starts to expand. Unless unforeseen events take place, Rodenberger said he expects the feeder market to remain steady throughout the winter.

Going into the holidays, Rodenberger said runs should be lighter, which is normal.

“We are seeing runs lighter compared to a year ago just out of the number of cows we have sold,” Rodenberger said. “I think the only reason our numbers have stayed pretty consistent is they have been pulling cattle forward.”
