Oklahoma Winter Wheat Plantings Closer to Completion at 71 Percent

SOUTHERN PLAINS WINTER WHEAT:

In Oklahoma, winter wheat planted reached 71 percent, up 2 points from the previous year but down 4 points from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 52 percent, up 13 points from the previous year but down 4 points from normal.

In Kansas, winter wheat planted was 85 percent, ahead of 74 percent last year and 79 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 57 percent, ahead of 44 percent last year, and near 55 percent average.

In Texas, winter wheat planted reached 68 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 45 percent, even with the previous year and the five-year average.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted reached 77 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 53 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and even with the average.

Corn harvested for the U.S reached 59 percent, even with the previous year and up 5 points from the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested reached 76 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 9 points from the five-year average.

Cotton bolls opening reached 90 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the five-year average. Cotton harvested reached 41 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor. 

OKLAHOMA:

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.00 inches. According to the October 17th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 73 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 27 points from last year. Additionally, 48 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 52 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the low 60’s.

Cotton bolls opening reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Cotton harvested reached 22 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and from normal. Cotton conditions rated 4 percent good to excellent, 48 percent fair and 48 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 95 percent. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 30 percent, down 9 points from the previous year but up 8 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 66 percent, down 28 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 5 percent, down 29 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal.

Pasture and range conditions rated 28 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor. 

Livestock conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 60 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 85 percent, ahead of 74 percent last year and 79 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 57 percent, ahead of 44 percent last year, and near 55 percent average.

Corn harvested was 82 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 76 percent average.

Soybeans dropping leaves was 97 percent, near 96 percent last year and 95 percent average. Harvested was 71 percent, ahead of 63 percent last year, and well ahead of 50 percent average. Harvested was 57 percent, ahead of 51 percent last year and 45 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 34 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton harvested was 30 percent, behind 42 percent last year, but ahead of 13 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair and 22 percent poor to very poor.

Winter wheat planted reached 68 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 45 percent, even with the previous year and the five-year average.

Corn harvested reached 89 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 86 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and the five-year average. Cotton harvested reached 40 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 66 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor.
