Wells Christmas Tree Farm Spreads Christmas Cheer Across the State

Listen to KC Sheperd visit with Jesse Wells, owner of Wells Christmas Tree Farm in Norman, OK .

Farm Director, KC Sheperd is talking with Jesse Wells about his family’s Christmas Tree Farm. The Wells Christmas Tree Farm is located in Norman, Oklahoma, and offers Christmas tree cuttings, events, activities, photo opportunities, and shopping for the whole family.

Wells Christmas Tree Farm is currently open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Each year, Oklahoma Forestry Services selects a Christmas tree to be displayed during the holiday season. This year, the tree was graciously donated by Wells Christmas Tree Farm in Norman, Oklahoma!

“Out here at the farm, we have food trucks and live Christmas music,” Wells said. “We will have Santa Claus and (live) reindeer, and just all kinds of fun games, toys, and outdoor games for the kids to play.”

While they primarily grow pine trees at their farm, Wells said they also have a variety of trees from different states because some trees grow better in the environment up north.

“We have some of the most beautiful trees around, and we also bring trees in from the northern states,” Wells said.

When visitors arrive at the Wells Christmas Tree Farm, Wells said they will be greeted by one of several outstanding employees to help them with their visit.

“If they want to go cut their own tree, we will hand you a saw and a sled and send you off on your way,” Wells said. “We have two acres of Virginia Pines that we grow of all sizes. It is really just a good family experience.”

While the drought has been tough, Wells said the Virginia Pines grown on the farm are hearty trees that grow well on their own.

“The key is keeping the grass and weeds away from the base of them, so they have a good, full bottom on them, and trimming them,” Wells said. “We have to shear them four or five times a year. We do have to spray them because you don’t want spiders and bugs in them when you put them in your house. That is a necessity.”

Wells said it is a guarantee that the trees at Wells Christmas Tree Farm will not bring bugs into homes.

As for the care of these trees after they are cut and taken home, Wells said the most important factor is to make sure to keep water in the stand.

“They will generally take water for two to three weeks, and then they will slow down,” Wells said. “The key at that point is not to have it too hot and to not have any open vents,” Well said. “Not because there is a fire hazard or anything, but just because that hot air will dry out the tree quicker.”
