Associate Farm Editor Reagan Calk is talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets. Rodenberger said the week started out with steady volume.

Rodenberger said the calf market was steady, with strong demand for calves weighing under 650 pounds.

“Feeder cattle we saw the week before were cheaper, but we saw pretty good demand the first part of the week,” Rodenberger said. “On the front end of the cattle, we saw fully steady, maybe a pinch higher.”

Throughout the week, Rodenberger said he saw more optimism in the bidding, aiding in a steady flow of demand.

“They are quoting the market two to eight dollars higher around, but basically what I saw sitting in the auctions, I would still call steady because your good cattle is what is leading the market,” Rodenberger said.

As the wheat starts to play out, Rodenberger said he expects those cattle to come into town within the next few weeks. Regarding moisture in the state, Rodenberger said many ponds are not full yet, so if we have a dry summer, there will be more cow reduction.

Next week, Rodenberger said he expects bigger runs as cattle come off of wheat.
