OFB President Rodd Moesel Reports to the Membership at Their Virtual Statewide Meeting
|
Oklahoma Farm Bureau held their 2020 online business meeting with guest speakers, including American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall, Governor Kevin Stitt, and OKFB President Rodd Moesel.
Rodd Moesel offered His annual report during the meeting and reflected on how proud he is of our farmers and ranchers this year for overcoming so many obstacles, "The Keyword has had to be flexibility. I think we can take our hats off to our staff and our members and how we've all been working to adjust to these unique and challenging times and display that flexibility."
Moesel mentioned all the work that has gone into dealing with the market disruptions that affected the biggest commodity in the beef market and the webinars and discussions that centered around that topic, "We had a special study trying to look at the beef markets and things we might do to encourage new processing and other things we could help to do in the beef market. It's a very complicated area, but we are working closely with the cattlemen and the ag industry to try to find solutions going forward."
Moesel expressed his excitement over the OKFB OSU Extension ATV program that is up and running in Guthrie. This allows for training on ATVs and, in the future, will provide some leadership training opportunities for 4H and FFA chapters.

Pork Exports Remain on Record Pace through September; Beef Exports Trend Lower
|
September exports of U.S. pork increased 10% year-over-year, keeping 2020 exports on a record pace, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Beef exports were fairly steady with last year in major Asian markets but trended lower overall.
Pork exports reached 222,475 metric tons (mt) in September, with value increasing 6% to $563.2 million. Shipments to China/Hong Kong remained higher than a year ago in September but made up a smaller share of the global total compared to recent months, as exports set a new record for Canada and increased year-over-year to Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Chile and the Caribbean.
Through the first three quarters of the year, pork exports were 16% ahead of last year's record pace in both volume (2.22 million mt) and value ($5.69 billion). The increases were even stronger for pork muscle cuts, jumping 22% to 1.87 million mt valued at $4.93 billion (up 19%).

AFR/OFU President Scott Blubaugh on the Possibility of a Change in Administration and Their Upcoming Beef Industry Consolidation Forum
|
Oklahomans are still waiting to find out who the next Leader of the Country will be, along with several essential senate seats that are still undecided. Associate Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with AFR/OFU President Scott Blubaugh to get his thoughts on the election, and Blubaugh said he was sad to see that Collin Peterson will not be returning as the Agriculture Committee Chairman, "That was a big loss to agriculture with all his knowledge." Congressman Collin Peterson was defeated in the District 7 Congressional race by Republican Michelle Fischbach.
With the presidential race still up in the air, Blubaugh said it is starting to look like we may have a change in the administration and that always comes with a few hurdles, "You'll have a new secretary of Agriculture, all the way down to new positions in Oklahoma with a change in administration. So that is the biggest thing; new people will fill those slots with different ideas so that it will change around a little bit." Even if we see a new Administration, Blubaugh said he is confident they will find a way to work together, 'We always work with both sides. We are very bipartisan here at AFR/OFU and work with both sides every day. So it won't be that big of a lift for our organization."
Blubaugh said the number one issue his members are concerned with is the beef consolidation, "The lack of markets, for the beef industry, the constitution of the packers, and the dysfunctional market place in the cattle world. It's been a big issue for about 18 months now." He says with all the disruptions in the marketplace, you've really seen a lot of national attention on this issue as well, and he thinks it will continue until some resolution is found to address the problems. Blubaugh said he hopes that some good ideas will come up at their beef industry consolidation forum that is coming up November 10, from 5-8 pm at Redlands Community College in El Reno.

Oklahoma Rancher and American Angus Assoc. Leader John Pfeiffer Says Better Genetic Information Has Improved Herd Quality
|
Better genetic information has greatly improved the quality of cattle in both registered and commercial herds said John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla., rancher and past president of the American Angus Association, during a recent interview with me.
Pfeiffer said the AngusLink value added program continues to advance helping bring value to cattle with Angus genetics.
AngusLink, is a relatively new cattle program from the American Angus Association that offers a validation of genetic potential for feeder cattle.
We had an AngusLink sale here in Oklahoma, there is interest in Kansas, and we have another sale scheduled Dec. 7 at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, he said.
The Angus Association has also been working on identifying haplotypes to reduce embryonic loss, Pfeiffer said.
We have always known to some extent that when you breed certain bulls to certain cows you have some embryonic loss, Pfeiffer said. By identifying haplotypes, we will cut down on embryonic loss. This will be a tool similar to EPDs.

OSU's Kim Anderson Says we could be Nearing the Top of the Wheat Rally
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson talks about the the possibility of seeing some lower prices ahead in the wheat market, "If you're looking at that wheat market, We've got, 30% of that crop to be sold yet. If you go back to August 7th the
December contract price was about $4.20 cents it went up to $5.80, that's $1.60 price increase. Technically, looks like the markets building what we call a head and shoulders top. Now if this top comes through, and we'll know by the beginning of next week, you're looking at a potential 80 cent price decline in wheat prices. So, I think that the market needs to watch what's going, and producers need to watch what's going on, because there is the potential for significantly lower prices."

Latest Drought Monitor Map Shows Recent Ice Storm Dramatically Reduced Drought For Many Areas of Oklahoma and Kansas
|
Copious amounts of precipitation, some of it frozen, resulted in one and two category improvements for parts of Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma during this past week, according to the latest U.S. Drought monitor. This was particularly true in northwest and central Oklahoma where 3-5 inches fell.
West Texas, much of it in the Extreme (D3) to Exceptional (D4) Drought Category, received some light amounts and category improvement was minimal.
Little to no precipitation fell on the southern half of Texas for the second consecutive week. October is generally a wet month for that area but it has received less than 25 percent of normal during the last 30 days.
Southern Kansas, one of the dryer spots in the Plains, received 1-4 inches during this past week, leading to a full category improvement.
To view the U.S. Drought map, click here.
For Oklahoma, last week’s storms brought a record ice event, leaving many without power. The moisture was welcomed by winter wheat producers but the damage from the ice storm will linger for months.
Statistically the precipitation made a huge difference on the drought map, going from 52 percent of the state covered in shades of drought to just 26 percent this week. It is difficult to remember a time this year where we have seen that much of a dramatic improvement in drought conditions in just one week.

NCBA Highlights Beef and Produce Pairings on Healthy Plates with #UnitedOnThePlate Partnership
|
In an effort to continue to highlight beef’s place on the plate, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, has partnered with the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) to celebrate how beef, vegetables and fruits are #UnitedOnThePlate. The #UnitedOnThePlate campaign focuses on rallying food and health experts on social media and educating consumers about how delicious, nutrient-rich beef brings more to the plate, when paired with fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy, balanced diet.
To reach as many consumers as possible and highlight beef in new ways, the partnership will leverage the PBH digital and social media channels, which reach more than 1 million consumers as well as its Fruit & Vegetable Ambassadors In Action influencer network. This network is comprised of food, culinary, nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle influencers with sizeable followings.
The #UnitedOnThePlate activations include:
September:
• National Fruits & Veggies Month: Better Together
September kicked off the partnership with content reinforcing the nutrition and flavor benefits of uniting beef and produce on the plate – the perfect duo for healthier, happier lives. National Fruits & Veggies Month, when fruits and veggies are being celebrated nationwide, presents a great opportunity to spotlight how pairing produce with other nutrient-rich foods, like beef, can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
