NCBA Ranch Succession Planning Work Book and Shannon Ferrell Conversation

Succession Planning for Beef Cattle Operations

Ron Hays talks at CattleCon26 with Dr. Shannon Ferrell about how succession planning works for cattle producers

At CattleCon26, Dr. Shannon Farrell led the session “Continuing a Legacy: Succession Planning for Cattle Producers,” offering a comprehensive guide to ranch succession planning. Farrell, a professor at Oklahoma State University specializing in agricultural law, drew on his personal experiences and professional expertise to emphasize the urgency of preparing for generational transitions in ranch ownership and management. Supported by the Southern Risk Management Education Center and USDA NEFA, the session highlighted collaborative efforts to equip ranchers with essential tools for success.

Farrell shared the story of his brother Adam, whose unexpected passing disrupted their family’s succession plan, illustrating the unpredictable nature of life. He warned against the common yet flawed approach of splitting ranch assets equally among heirs, using data from the Kansas Farm Management Association to demonstrate its financial risks. Farrell advocated for transparency, fairness, and aligning values among stakeholders, referencing Proverbs 27:6 and the biblical story of Jacob and Laban to underscore the importance of addressing family dynamics.

The session outlined a five-step process: inventorying assets, engaging stakeholders, creating a detailed plan, establishing estate planning tools, and revisiting the plan regularly. Farrell stressed the importance of estate planning tools, including wills, trusts, durable powers of attorney, and advance directives for healthcare. He encouraged ranchers to transition from CEO to chairman of the board, a concept inspired by farm consultant Dick Whitman, to guide successors while stepping back from daily operations.

Farrell used cultural and historical references, such as Cortez burning his ships and Top Gun Maverick, to illustrate the emotional challenges of succession planning. He recommended assembling a professional team, likened to the Magnificent Seven, including accountants, attorneys, investment advisors, and ranch management consultants. Farrell emphasized the need for liquidity, buy-sell agreements, and prenuptial agreements to protect ranch assets and ensure equitable transitions.

The session concluded with a call to action, urging attendees to prioritize succession planning to safeguard their ranches and families. The ranch succession workbook mentioned in the presentation can be downloaded below.
