The Oklahoma Sorghum Commission and Association, in partnership with Oklahoma State University Extension, will host an informational meeting and lunch for farmers from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday (March 5) at the Stafford Air & Space Museum, Explorers Room, 3000 Logan Road in Weatherford.
The meeting is open to producers who currently grow sorghum, also known as milo, as well as farmers considering adding sorghum to their operations. Attendees will receive timely, research-based updates focused on maximizing efficiency and managing production challenges heading into the 2026 growing season, as well as insight into the export market and demand for U.S. sorghum around the world.
“We are excited to bring the latest information to ag producers in western Oklahoma in a very challenging time for farmers who are looking for every possible way to increase profitability,” said Oklahoma Sorghum Executive Director Jeff Hickman. “We hope sorghum growers in the region, along with any farmers thinking about adding milo to their operations, will join us Thursday morning to hear from and ask questions of the specialists who will be in Weatherford.”
The program will feature presentations from leading OSU sorghum experts covering key production topics. Dr. Brian Arnall will discuss critical nitrogen management strategies and proper application timing in sorghum. Dr. Miara Duffeck will address timely scouting for disease in sorghum and available application options. Dr. Ashleigh Faris will cover chinch bugs, aphids, and head worms, including application concerns and effective management strategies. Dr. Josh Lofton will focus on making the best use of your sorghum inputs to improve efficiency and profitability.
Texas Sorghum Executive Director Wayne Cleveland will share the latest outlook on exporting U.S. sorghum and opportunities around the globe. Attendees can also tour the Stafford Space Museum as part of the event. Participants will be eligible to receive two ODAFF continuing education units, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend.
“This regional meeting provides practical, in-season information we can take directly back to our operations,” said Matt Braun of Hobart who serves on the Oklahoma Sorghum Commission and Association boards. “I invite and encourage anyone interested in sorghum production to attend.”
