Following her graduation from Oklahoma State University in May 2025 with a PhD in Animal Science, Dr. Alexis Main is embarking on a mission to start Bridging the Gap and reshape the narrative surrounding Oklahoma’s pork industry. Operating through her consulting business, Paradigm AG, Dr. Main has stepped into the role of Oklahoma Animal Care Advocate. Main told Farm Director, KC Sheperd her primary objective is to engage with local communities and translate the complex science behind livestock production into relatable information for consumers.

Humanizing the Farm: The Story Behind the Science

One of the central pillars of Dr. Main’s work is helping farmers tell their stories. She acknowledges that there is often a disconnect between the public’s perception of animal welfare and the reality on the farm.

“I’ve actually gone to several different farms and every time that I’ve gone, I’ve asked, ‘What is something that you would want people to know?’ and each of those producers and those farmers have said, ‘I want people to know how much I care about these animals, how much we want them to do well, and how much care does go into that,'” Main shared.

Dr. Main emphasizes that high standards of animal welfare are not only ethically right but also fundamental to the success of any farming operation.

  • Direct Correlation: There is a direct link between animal well-being and productivity.
  • Mutual Benefit: Proper care and positive welfare practices lead to better production outcomes, benefiting both the animal and the producer.
  • Producer Passion: Farmers are deeply invested in the health and productivity of their livestock.

Community Engagement and Education

As she looks toward the future, Dr. Main is eager to connect with a diverse range of audiences across Oklahoma. Whether it’s a business organization, a youth group, or a community gathering, she aims to serve as an educational speaker who can provide clarity on where food comes from.

“I would really like to be in front of as many community groups as I possibly can throughout Oklahoma.” Having transitioned from Payne County and her studies at OSU into her current professional role, she is focused on deepening her involvement in the Oklahoma agricultural community.

Over the next year, Dr. Main plans to solidify these connections and establish Paradigm Ag as a key resource for agricultural education and advocacy in the state.
