Honoring the Legacy of Bob Funk and Celebrating Legislative Showmanship at OYE

The Oklahoma Youth Expo (OYE) continues to serve as a premier stage for agricultural youth, built on a foundation of mentorship and industry support. This year’s event is marked by a deep reflection on the legacy of Bob Funk, whose visionary leadership and historic $5 million endowment have secured the long-term future of the expo. Farm Director KC Sheperd spoke with OYE’s Tyler Norvell about the profound impact of Mr. Funk’s contributions and the continued success of the Legislative Celebrity Showmanship, which brings state leaders into the ring alongside Oklahoma’s young exhibitors.

A Visionary Foundation: Remembering Bob Funk

This marks the first OYE since the passing of Bob Funk last July, a loss felt deeply across the organization. Norvell noted that a true hallmark of leadership is ensuring an organization is prepared for success well into the future, a feat Mr. Funk achieved through both financial and structural guidance.

“It’s unbelievable what he’s done and how he’s set us up for success. That’s what a real leader does… he knew when he was gone… this place was set up for success.”

Beyond the financial security of the $5 million endowment, Mr. Funk’s personal connection to the students remains a core part of the event’s atmosphere. His impact is visible throughout the grounds, where many exhibitors carry “Thank You Bob” stickers to honor his memory.

Legislative Celebrity Showmanship: Connecting Capitol and Cage

Last Year’s Winner was Pro-Tem, Lonnie Paxton

A cornerstone of the OYE is the Legislative Celebrity Showmanship, an event that pairs state legislators with youth from their respective districts. The program has seen exponential growth since its inception in 2003, expanding from just six participants to approximately 120 of the 149 members of the Oklahoma Legislature this year.

The event provides a unique opportunity for both rural and urban lawmakers to witness the dedication required to raise and show livestock. Norvell credited the late Justin Whitefield for the show’s original vision, which has become a uniquely Oklahoman tradition.

“There’s no other state that does this. We are so lucky in Oklahoma… to have 20 or 30 members of the legislature who showed [at OYE].”

Legislative Showmanship kicks off tonight in the OG&E Coliseum at 6:00 pm, and everyone is welcome to watch!

Record-Breaking Success at the Gilt Sale

The OYE Gilt Sale has evolved into a premier national event, attracting breeders from across the country. Managed by Todd and Blake Kennedy, the sale has become a life-changing platform for young exhibitors, driven by high demand for quality genetics.

  • The sale features some of the top swine genetics in the United States.
  • Market values have seen dramatic increases, with some gilts selling for as much as 180,000.
  • The event fosters a competitive environment that benefits both the youth and the broader swine industry.

Anticipation for the Grand Drive

As the expo moves toward its conclusion, the focus shifts to the Grand Drive. This year is particularly special for the OYE staff, as it marks 10 years that the current core leadership team—including Norvell, JD, Melissa, Cass, and Bray—has worked together to produce the event. Despite the challenging cold weather, the team remains focused on delivering a high-quality experience for the thousands of families in attendance.

“I know I’ve got the best staff in the world, and they’re going to kill it. It’s going to be awesome.”
