A living piece of Oklahoma history is taking root in the heart of the nation’s capital, standing as a testament to the “Oklahoma Standard” and the enduring spirit of a state that refused to be broken. On the grounds of the United States Capitol, a sapling from Oklahoma City’s famed Survivor Tree is now flourishing, serving as a permanent memorial to those lost and affected by the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
The original Survivor Tree, an American elm, became a global icon of resilience after it miraculously survived the blast despite being shredded, scorched by fire, and pelted with glass. Against all odds, the tree leafed out the following spring, becoming a symbol of hope for a grieving community.
A Growing Legacy in D.C.
Standing before the young tree, U.S. Senator James Lankford and U.S. Representative Stephanie Bice marked a year since the sapling was first planted on the Capitol grounds. The planting took place on the 30th anniversary of the bombing as a way to ensure the story of Oklahoma’s resilience is shared with the millions who visit Washington, D.C..
- Remarkable Growth: Since its planting in 2025, the sapling has grown to approximately 14 feet tall.
