Crop Progress: Corn Holds Strong as Soybeans, Cotton and Pastures Continue to Struggle

In the latest Crop Progress report from USDA, the U.S. Corn Crop is rated 68% Good to Excellent this week, up 1 point from last week. Soybean crop conditions are 65% good to excellent this week up 1point from last week.

The U.S. cotton crop is rated 44% good to excellent this week, down 2 points from 46% a week ago. For the US Grain Sorghum crop, the latest good-to-excellent ratings are 45%, down 5 points from last week’s 50%.

Winter Wheat harvest now stands at 67%, compared to 59% one week ago and 62% at this point last year.

Pasture and Range

In the southern plains, Oklahoma pasture and range conditions are now ranked 34% good to excellent, versus 33% last week and 63% a year ago. Poor to very poor ratings are now at 34%, versus 31% a week ago and 9% a year ago.

Kansas good to excellent conditions are ranked at 57% compared to 56% last week and 59% a year ago. Poor to very poor conditions are ranked 14% this week, 15% last week, and 13% a year ago.

Texas good to excellent conditions are ranked 35% this week, 40% last week and 60% a year ago. Poor to very poor conditions are ranked 29% this week, 27% a week ago, and 21% a year ago.

The 48 state national pasture and range conditions are now at 30% good to excellent versus 33% last week and 45% one year ago. Poor to very poor ratings nationally are at 40% this week versus 36% last week and 28% one year ago. 

Corn Statistics:

Oklahoma corn silking is at 38%. Corn conditions rank as follows: 19% poor to very poor, 19% fair, and 64% good to excellent.

Kansas corn silking is at 50%. Corn conditions rank as follows: 11% poor to very poor, 25% fair, and 64% good to excellent.

Texas corn silking is at 82%. Corn conditions rank as follows: 26% poor to very poor, 31% fair, and 43% good to excellent.

Soybean statistics:

Oklahoma soybeans blooming are at 32%. Oklahoma soybean conditions rank as follows: 32% poor to very poor, 33% fair, and 35% good to excellent.

Kansas soybeans blooming are at 37%. Kansas soybean conditions rank as follows: 8% poor to very poor, 23% fair, and 69% good to excellent.

Texas soybeans blooming are at 53%. Texas soybean conditions rank as follows: 10% poor to very poor, 33% fair, and 57% good to excellent.

Cotton statistics:

Oklahoma cotton squaring is at 35%. Oklahoma cotton conditions rank as follows: 6% poor to very poor, 63% fair, and 31% good to excellent.

Kansas cotton squaring is at 75%. Kansas cotton conditions rank as follows: 14% poor to very poor, 46% fair, and 40% good to excellent.

Texas cotton squaring is at 50%. Texas cotton conditions rank as follows: 24% poor to very poor, 46% fair, and 30% good to excellent

Sorghum statistics:

Oklahoma sorghum headed is at 21%, up 11% from a year ago.

Kansas sorghum headed is at 17%, up 12% from a year ago.

Texas sorghum headed is at 74%, down 1% from a year ago.
