Oklahoma Hay Market Demand Remains High as Producers Prepare for Winter Amid Widespread Drought

The Oklahoma hay market demand remains high across the state as agricultural producers secure forage supplies in preparation for the upcoming fall and winter feeding seasons. According to the latest Oklahoma Hay Market Report released by the USDA on October 16, 2026, receipts totaled 4,018 bales, down from 7,200 reported in the previous period but up significantly from 920 bales recorded a year ago. Recent rainfall slowed physical hay movement across several regions, yet overall movement continues steadily as producers build inventories.

Severe environmental pressures continue to drive forage needs across the state. The latest Oklahoma Mesonet Drought Monitor indicates that 100 percent of Oklahoma is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse, with 95.16 percent in moderate drought, 79.62 percent in severe drought, 43.84 percent in extreme drought, and 16.55 percent in exceptional drought. Zero percent of the state is currently free from drought conditions.
