Some Producers are Still Weary about Receiving Adequate Moisture

Listen to KC Visit with Bob Rodenberger at Stockman’s Livestock Auction in Apache

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

“I have had a lot of people that are pretty good-sized cow operators that kept no heifers back,” Rodenberger said.

One reason people may not be keeping those heifers back, Rodenberger said, is because of lack of moisture at the moment, but also the market value for those heifers is good right now.

“Until we get through the possibility that we are going to have grass, hay, and pond water,” Rodenberger said. “Pond water is still an issue. We have got to continue to get through some of these rains.”

Rodenberger said the markets this week were exceptional. Looking into next week’s market, Rodenberger said it will depend on where the cattle are coming from.

“I would say our run will be a little bit lighter, just due to everybody getting some rain and problems getting around,” Rodenberger said.

The biggest thing producers have to face right now, Rodenberger said, is going holding onto meat prices.

“We have a lot of opportunity to hold on to some of these profits with just some minimal risk management that is available to all of us,” Rodenberger said. “I used to be the world’s worst not to use it at all, but it is available.”
