NSP Past Chairman Kody Carson Testifies Before Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Need to Strengthen Farm Safety Net

The Senate Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Commodity Programs, Risk Management and Trade hosted two hearings this week. The first hearing, entitled, “Producers Perspectives on the Farm Safety Net”, featured the leaders of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and the National Farmers Union (NFU), along with 10 producers representing sorghum, wheat, dry beans, dairy, rice, cotton, soybeans, sugarbeets, peanuts, and corn.

Past Chairman Kody Carson represented National Sorghum Producers, stating, “Right now, the farm safety net is not adequate. While the changes in the 2018 Farm Bill have been helpful, given the level and speed at which costs have increased, statutory PLC reference prices are now far too low to provide effective support in light of the many risks facing farmers in 2023.” Carson’s full opening testimony may be viewed here.
