U.S. Corn Crop Conditions Finally Improving, Oklahoma Winter Wheat Harvest at 80 Percent

U.S. Crop Progress:

After falling for three weeks in a row, corn condition improved last week, but just by 1 percentage point, according to USDA NASS’ weekly Crop Progress report released Monday. Soybean condition, on the other hand, logged its fourth weekly decline during the week ended July 2.

More widespread rain and cooler weather are in the forecast for the coming week, which should be beneficial for crops in many areas of the country.

Winter wheat harvested for the U.S. reached 37 percent, down 15 percentage points from the previous year and down 9 points from the average. Winter wheat conditions rated 40 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 29 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 40 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 28 percent poor to very poor.

Corn silking in the U.S. reached 8 percent, up one percentage point from the previous year and down one from the average. Corn conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor. 

**Last week, the dry weather conditions in Illinois and Missouri were noted as the corn crops did not yield great conditions in the past crop progress report. Illinois is now sitting at 24 percent good to excellent, down from last week’s 26 percent good to excellent. Missouri’s crop is now at 37 percent good to excellent, improved from last week’s 31 percent good to excellent rating.

Soybeans blooming reached 24 percent, up 9 percentage points from the previous year and up 4 points from the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 4 percent, up one percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the average.

OKLAHOMA:

In Oklahoma, cotton conditions dropped 20 percent good to excellent since last week, and soybeans have dropped 10 percent good to excellent. Corn conditions have improved, while winter wheat conditions have remained unchanged. After recent rains, pasture and range conditions have improved by nearly 15 percentage points in the good to excellent category.

Winter wheat harvested reached 80 percent, down 17 points from the previous year and down 12 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 22 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Corn emerged reached 96 percent. Corn silking reached 35 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 9 points from normal. Corn conditions rated 76 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 70 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 2 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum planted reached 91 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 67 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 4 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair, and 1 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans planted reached 80 percent, down 3 points from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 68 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair, and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 72 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 6 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton planted reached 97 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and unchanged from normal. Cotton squaring reached 23 percent, unchanged from the previous year and up 1 point from normal. Cotton conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair, and 6 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 76 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 3 percent poor to very poor.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 95 percent. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 47 percent, down 18 points from the previous year and from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 80 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 5 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 6 points from normal.

Peanut conditions rated 89 percent good to excellent and 11 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair.

Livestock conditions rated 69 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 67 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat harvested reached 46 percent, down 34 percentage points from the previous year and down 17 points from the average. Winter wheat conditions rated 16 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 51 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 16 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 53 percent poor to very poor.

Corn silking reached 19 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Corn conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 16 percent, up 12 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair, and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton squaring reached 41 percent, down 7 percentage points from the previous year and up 4 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair, and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum planted reached 87 percent, down 7 percentage points from the previous year and down 4 points from the average. Sorghum headed reached 5 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Sorghum conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 43 percent fair, and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair, and 9 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair, and 31 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair, and 29 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat harvested reached 86 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down one point from the average. Winter wheat conditions rated 39 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 32 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Corn silked reached 73 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Corn dough reached 45 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and down one from the average. Corn conditions rated 67 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 8 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton planted reached 96 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and the average. Cotton conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 30 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed reached 64 percent, even with the previous year and the average. Sorghum coloring reached 40 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 5 points from the average.  Sorghum conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated  57 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Peanuts planted reached 96 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down one from the average. Peanuts pegging reached 10 percent, up one point from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Peanut conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 4 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans planted reached 96 percent, down one point from the previous year and down 2 points from the average. Soybeans emerged reached 90 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 3 points from the average. Soybeans blooming reached 41 percent, down 17 points from the previous year and down 9 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 26 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair, and 51 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 1 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor.
