High Temperatures Cause Lower Crop Condition Ratings In This Week’s Crop Progress

The high temperatures and limited rainfall in Oklahoma have caused some crops to begin to show signs of stress. Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.53 inches. According to the August 1st US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 48 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 52 points from last year. Additionally, 18 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 81 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the mid to upper 80’s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

U.S. corn and soybean conditions were both back up 2 percentage points last week, according to USDA NASS’ weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Corn silking reached 93 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Corn dough reached 47 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Corn dented reached 8 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and even with the average. Corn conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans blooming reached 90 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 66 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton squaring reached 92 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Cotton setting bolls reached 63 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 8 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and the average. Cotton conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor.  Last week’s conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Corn silking reached 89 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 1 point from normal. Corn dough reached 55 percent, up 13 points from the previous year and up 14 points from normal. Corn conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 77 percent good to excellent, 16 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed reached 37 percent, down 12 points from the previous year and down 11 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 13 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 70 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 68 percent, up 10 points from the previous year and up 16 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 17 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 60 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 67 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and from normal. Peanut conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton squaring reached 90 percent, down 4 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Cotton setting bolls reached 67 percent, up 21 points from the previous year and from normal. Cotton conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 37 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair, and 23 percent poor to very poor.

Hay: The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 68 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 48 percent, down 15 points from the previous year and down 5 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 65 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Corn silking was 91 percent, ahead of 82 percent last year, and near 90 percent for the five-year average. Dough was 57 percent, ahead of 46 percent last year, and near 55 percent average. Dented was 11 percent, ahead of 6 percent last year, but near 15 percent average. Corn conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming was 85 percent, ahead of 74 percent last year and 77 percent average. Setting pods was 54 percent, ahead of 40 percent last year and 48 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 44 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 22 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed was 47 percent, ahead of 33 percent last year, and equal to average. Coloring was 9 percent, ahead of 4 percent last year, and near 6 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton squaring was 92 percent, behind 100 percent last year, but near 90 percent average. Setting bolls was 72 percent, near 76 percent last year, but well ahead of 47 percent average. Bolls opening was 1 percent, near 2 percent last year, and equal to average. Cotton conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 6 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Corn silking reached 92 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 3 points from the average. Corn dough reached 78 percent, up 6 percent from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Corn dented reached 71 percent, up 8 points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Corn conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton squaring reached 90 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Cotton setting bolls reached 53 percent, down 8 percent from the previous year and down 2 points from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 12 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 56 percent poor to very poor.  Last week’s conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 50 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed reached 88 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Sorghum coloring reached 70 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 23 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 65 percent, down 4 percentage points from the previous year and down 5 from the average. Peanut conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 47 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 43 percent good to excellent, 48 percent fair and 9 percent poor to very poor. 

Range and pasture conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 64 percent poor to very poor. last week’s conditions rated 16 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 58 percent poor to very poor.
