Southern Plains Winter Wheat Conditions Rate Below 50 Percent Good to Excellent

SOUTHERN PLAINS WINTER WHEAT:

Oklahoma winter wheat planted reached 75 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 9 points from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 54 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 14 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor.

Kansas winter wheat planted was 91 percent, ahead of 85 percent last year, and near 87 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 70 percent, ahead of 56 percent last year and 65 percent average. Winter wheat conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor.

Texas winter wheat planted reached 73 percent, down 10 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 55 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat ratings reached 41 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Winter wheat planted for the U.S. reached 84 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the five-year average.  Winter wheat emerged reached 64 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 47 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor.

Corn harvested in the U.S. reached 71 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 5 points from the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested in the U.S. reached 85 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 7 from the average.

Cotton bolls opening in the U.S. reached 93 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Cotton harvested reached 49 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor.

OKLAHOMA:

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 2.82 inches. According to the October 24th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 72 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 28 points from last year. Additionally, 49 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 51 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.

Sorghum mature reached 98 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 3 points from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 60 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 1 point from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair and 25 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 87 percent, down 2 points from the previous year but up 4 points from normal. Soybeans harvested reached 47 percent, down 2 points from the previous year but up 7 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts mature reached 93 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Peanuts harvested reached 55 percent, down 2 points from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton harvested reached 33 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 3 percent good to excellent, 52 percent fair, and 45 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated percent good to excellent, 48 percent fair and 48 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 32 percent, down 17 points from the previous year but up 6 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 70 percent. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 7 percent, down 37 points from the previous year and down 8 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 65 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 7 percent good to excellent. Last week’s conditions rated 61 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 28 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat planted was 91 percent, ahead of 85 percent last year, and near 87 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 70 percent, ahead of 56 percent last year and 65 percent average. Winter wheat conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor.

Corn harvested was 89 percent, equal to last year and ahead of 84 percent average.

Soybeans harvested was 80 percent, near 77 percent last year, and ahead of 66 percent average.

Sorghum mature was 96 percent, equal to both last year and average. Harvested was 69 percent, near 66 percent last year, and ahead of 59 percent average.

Cotton harvested was 35 percent, behind 49 percent last year, but ahead of 18 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 13 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 55 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 58 percent poor to very poor. 

TEXAS:

Winter wheat planted reached 73 percent, down 10 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged reached 55 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Winter wheat ratings reached 41 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor.

Corn harvested reached 93 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Corn conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 24 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton bolls opening reached 89 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and down 3 points from the average. Cotton harvested reached 43 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 66 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts mature reached 80 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and up 16 points from the average. Peanuts harvested reached 50 percent, down 3 percent from the previous year up 7 points from the average. Peanut conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 55 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 61 percent fair and 2 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans harvested reached 79 percent, even with the previous year and down 3 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 28 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Pasture and range conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair, and 62 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 67 percent poor to very poor.
