Remembering Glenn Payne

Glenn Payne, Former President of Oklahoma National Stockyards passed away on March 6th. Glenn was a true friend of Agriculture being part of the Stockyards for many years, as well as the Oklahoma Beef Council, LMA and many others. You could always find him working cattle with his daughters at their Mustang Farm. Glenn was a mentor to many in the industry, always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone who was looking to learn more about the Agricultures business.

Glenn Dale Payne was born on October 27, 1952 to Raymond Payne and Gean (Ramsey) Payne in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and entered heaven’s arena on March 6, 2024.

Glenn attended Mustang Public Schools from kindergarten through graduation, where he then went on to Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton before returning home to farm full-time. Glenn married Marilyn Johnson in 1971, and they moved to Tabler, Oklahoma after purchasing a turn-key dairy and farming operation. They had two daughters, and after selling the dairy operation in 1981, ran stocker calves and a cow/calf operation there until 1992, when he took over full operation of the family farm in Mustang.

Glenn had purchased Wright Halliburton Commission Company at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in 1986. He had started buying cows and calves in the late 1970’s at many barns in both Oklahoma and Texas. In 1992, Glenn partnered with Leland White of Central Commission Company, and they renamed as Central-Halliburton Commission Company. He sold the company in 2022 but remained active buying at multiple sale barns. Glenn loved working with cattle producers to get the most value possible for their cattle and was heavily involved in a number of organizations to promote and fight for the cattle industry.

For over two decades, Glenn served as President of the Oklahoma National Stockyards Exchange. Glenn was also a member of the Livestock Marketing Association and served as President of the Oklahoma Livestock Marketing Association as well as serving on the Government and Industry Affairs Committee for many years. He served two terms on the Oklahoma Beef Council and was Co-Chair of the National Stakeholders Committee for the Beef Checkoff. He was a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association as well as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

Glenn was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed attending races at Texas Motor Speedway with the ‘Race Gang.’ He also enjoyed all types of music, especially ‘old’ country, and loved attending concerts. He could visit for hours about the cattle industry and had a knack for ‘when to sell.’ He had friends from around the nation and would drop on a dime to help someone in need. Glenn was very proud of his daughters, but the absolute apple of his eye was his only granddaughter, Bailey Renee.
