Ben Hale Sees Lighter Runs and High Quality Cattle This Week

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Ben Hale about the latest in the cattle markets.

On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions is located in Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Comanche.

Hale said at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, nearly 7,000 head of cattle sold on Tuesday compared to 9,000 a year ago.

“Cattle over 700 pounds were a little better, and under 700 was a little softer, so it kind of makes you wonder if some of those grass deals are getting filled up completely,” Hale said.

Regarding the market’s reaction to the case of Avian Influenza found in a herd of dairy cows earlier this month, Hale said it looks like the market is starting to bounce back from the event.

“We are still getting quite a bit of dollars per head for these cattle,” Hale said.

Looking at the markets in Comanche and Woodward, Hale said although lighter runs are expected, there will be good quality at both locations.

Hale can be contacted at 940-631-2333.
