During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report are spotlighting the 18 Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA, who are among the highest achievers in the organization.

The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness, and Star in Agricultural Production.

This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agriscience in 2024.

One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 98th Oklahoma State FFA Convention, which will take place on May 7th and 8th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This week, our coverage of the 2024 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists continues with Agriscience competitor Reagan Smith of the Oologah FFA chapter representing the Northeast Area.

“I have connected seven projects throughout my time at Oologah,” Smith said. “My most interesting ones were whenever I got really into reproduction.”

Smith said she has studied thawing temperatures on Brahman bovine semen straws, embryo transfer versus artificial insemination, and more. Of her projects, she said her favorite is her most recent one, which studies bovine semen production with the addition of oral feed supplements.

“In my feed supplements research, I found out that Vitamin C has a huge impact on bovine semen production,” Smith said.

Smith is grateful for her ag teacher’s help and support during her projects. After a field trip to Flying Cow Genetics in Welch, Oklahoma, Smith said she knew she wanted to learn more about reproductive science.

“I want to be able to help limit the stress that our producers and farmers are facing,” Smith said.

After high school graduation, Smith said she plans to continue her feed supplement research at Oklahoma State University. Smith plans to become a large and small animal vet and oen day, own her own veterinary clinic.
