On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions is located in Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Comanche.
“We had about 6500 yesterday compared to a little over 10,000 a year ago,” Hale said. “The market was stronger. We had the board up over $3.00 yesterday and held it to the close.”
Steers weighing over 850 pounds went quite a bit higher, Hale said, and the market was strong for other classes of cattle overall. When talking with his customers and cattle producers across the state, Hale said everyone is pleased with the market.
“Dollars per head is extremely strong right now,” Hale said.
Regarding pasture and range conditions, Hale said things are looking good across the region and ponds are starting to look fuller. Hale said he expects good markets and runs in Woodward in Comanche this week.
On June 12-15, the 2024 LMA Convention and World Livestock Auctioneer Championship will be held at the Oklahoma National Stockyards. Hale is a member of the board of directors of the Livestock Marketing Association based out of the Kansas City area. Hale said record numbers are expected as preparations are made for the big sale.
“Very lucky for all of our producers in this area to get the opportunity,” Hale said. “We have a few spots left where we can get some cattle in, but it is filling up pretty quickly.”
Hale can be contacted at 940-631-2333.
