KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.
This week’s sales in Oklahoma City were closed for Labor Day, but the rest of the sales Rodenberger took note of were steady to a year ago, but with a significant reduction in the calf market due to margin loss and the ongoing drought.
“We did see a lot of calves yesterday and they were mostly fleshy five and six-weight calves that brought $1,050 to $1,400. We still have a good market, but we’ve taken a lot of the fluff out of it.” Rodenberger said.
He added, “The cow market was still $5 – $7 cheaper than where we were two weeks ago for killing cows but, there is still some demand for long-bred cows. They are still bringing $1,800 to $2,300 for a four-year-old to a seven-year-old.”
He predicted that the market would continue to see runs similar to the current situation, with people selling their cows quicker and deeper than usual if the drought conditions continue as the weather forecasters predict.
