US Crop Progress Report from Monday, September 9, 2024
Corn condition fell slightly last week, while soybean condition held steady, according to USDA NASS’ weekly national Crop Progress report released Monday.
Corn was rated 64% in good-to-excellent condition, down 1 point from 65% the previous week. Soybeans were rated 65% good to excellent, unchanged from the previous week.
Corn was 95% in the dough stage, 74% dented, 29% mature and 5% harvested. Soybeans were 97% setting pods and 25% dropping leaves.
The US Cotton crop is now rated at 40% good- to- excellent- slipping another four point this week versus last. Grain Sorghum is rated 48% good- to- excellent this week, down two points versus a week ago.
Winter wheat was 6% planted.
Pasture and Range Conditions in the lower 48 states is rated 49 percent in good- to- excellent condition- one point better than a week ago but four points worst than a year ago. However, here in the southern plains, both Oklahoma and Kansas pasture and range ratings took a nine point drop from a week ago- both at 37% good to excellent. Missouri also took a big drop- falling seven points to 64% good to excellent.
Row Crops: Corn Crop conditions are now at 60% good to excellent versus 63% a week ago. Corn harvested reached 30 percent, up 10 points from previous week.
Sorghum crop conditions are now at 59% good to excellent- steady with last week. Sorghum mature reached 20 percent, up 7 points from last week but unchanged from normal. Sorghum harvested reached 10 percent, up 5 points from previous week and up 8 points from normal.
Soybean crop conditions are 35% good to excellent condition- down one point from last week. Soybeans blooming reached 93 percent, up 9 points from previous week and up 1 point from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 69 percent, up 10 points from previous week and up 1 from normal.
Peanuts mature reached 34 percent, up 9 points from last week and up 6 points from normal.
Oklahoma cotton crop ratings are at 35% good to excellent- down two points from a week ago. Upland Cotton setting bolls reached 98 percent, up 5 points from previous week and up 3 points from normal. Upland Cotton bolls opening reached 28 percent, up 7 points from last week and up 1 point from normal.
Pasture and Livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 37 percent good to excellent- a drop of nine percentage points compared to last week..
Winter wheat planted was 4%, near 3% last year and 2% for the five-year
average.
Corn condition rated 10% very poor, 17% poor, 32% fair, 32% good, and 9% excellent. Corn
dented was 88%, near 87% last year, and ahead of 83% average. Mature was 55%, near 51% last
year, and ahead of 39% average. Harvested was 14%, equal to last year, and near 10% average.
Soybean condition rated 4% very poor, 11% poor, 30% fair, 48% good, and 7% excellent.
Soybeans setting pods was 93%, near 94% last year and 91% average. Dropping leaves was
23%, behind 32% last year, but near 20% average.
Sorghum condition rated 8% very poor, 14% poor, 36% fair, 37% good, and 5% excellent.
Sorghum headed was 97%, near 94% last year and 95% average. Coloring was 67%, near 63%
both last year and average. Mature was 22%, near 19% last year, and ahead of 11% average.
Harvested was 2%, near 3% last year and 1% average.
Cotton condition rated 6% very poor, 15% poor, 27% fair, 44% good, and 8% excellent. Cotton
bolls opening was 44%, behind 52% last year, but ahead of 30% average.
Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 37% good to excellent- down nine points from a week ago.
Row Crops: Corn harvest was wrapping up in most parts of the state. In the Northern High Plains, some corn
fields were experiencing ear worm pressure, while sorghum harvest was expected to begin in the coming
week. Corn mature reached 93 percent, up 6 points from the previous week, and up 22 points from normal.
Corn harvested reached 75 percent, up 5 points from the previous week, and up 16 points from normal.
Sorghum mature reached 85 percent, up 5 points from the previous week and from normal. Sorghum
harvested reached 77 percent, up 4 points from the previous week, and up 5 points from normal.
In the Northern High Plains, aphids and spider mites were observed in some cotton fields, as some harvest aids were being applied to other fields. In South East Texas, cotton harvest was delayed due to wet field conditions from recent rains. Cotton bolls opening reached 40 percent, up 3 points from the previous week, and up 1 point from normal. Cotton harvested reached 18 percent, up 3 points from the previous week, and up 6 points from normal.
Peanuts mature reached 21 percent, up 7 points from the previous week, and up 6 points from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 61 percent, up 9 points from the previous week, but down 1 point from normal. Soybeans harvested reach 9 percent, down 15 points from normal. Sunflowers harvested reached 68 percent, up 3 points from the previous week, and up 11 points from normal.
Range and Pasture: In the Northern High Plains, some pastures were improving from the recent rain, while
forages in other pastures were going dormant due to dry conditions. In the Southern Low Plains, rain filled
some tanks, while in the Cross Timbers, North East Texas, the Edwards Plateau, and South Texas pastures
were greening up. In South Central Texas, South Texas and the Lower Valley, some livestock producers have
reduced supplemental feeding due to pastures improving from recent rainfall.
Statewide, Pasture and range conditions were rated at 18 good to excellent and 53 percent poor to very poor. The good to excellent rating was three points better than a week ago.
