Ben Hale Says Feeder Cattle Are Becoming Scarce

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Ben Hale about the latest in the cattle markets.

On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions are located in Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Comanche.

The Oklahoma National Stockyards had a good run of cattle at Monday’s sale: 6,800 compared to 6,900 a year ago. Hale said that the market was good on long-yearling steers and heifers.

“These feeders have become so scarce,” Hale said. “There are a lot of 60-day-weaned seven-weights, but sure enough a yearling would be weaned for ninety days to a hundred plus, and there’s just not many of them out there.”

Eight-weights and larger brought more than $2.50; calves were softer than last week, but weaned calves did better than un-weaned ones due to the cooling temperatures.

“We are going to have some of these 40-to-50-degree nights and 70-to-80-degree days. That’s perfect to get one sick,” Hale said. “I think everybody in the ag industry is praying for that one day of rain that we may have out there in the next fourteen days.”

The Woodward sale today expects to have 350-400 cows to sell, and Comanche expects at least 1,000 head. Woodward’s Thursday sale is expecting a lot of those scarce feeder cattle to come to town.
