Ben Hale Says Demand is Still Strong for Calves, Weaned or Unweaned

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Ben Hale about the latest in the cattle markets.

On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions are located in Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Comanche.

The National Stockyards sold 6,500 head, a steep uptick from last week just after the heavy rains. “There’s some guys really wanting to take advantage of this market,” Hale said. “The grazing deal was considerably higher yesterday. The feeder deal may have been steady to a little softer on the front end of those, but some places, they were sure enough cheaper., but the grazing cattle still have lots of interest whether they are weaned or unweaned.”

Hale is still hoping for winter wheat for grazing so long as the warmer temperatures hold out long enough.

He said the sale at Comanche is still pretty quiet due to the rain, but Woodward is expecting several feeder cattle in Thursday’s sale. With calf prices still as high as they are, he anticipates that people will still be bringing them to sell if they are able.

Overall, the rain has caused buyers to have a more positive outlook for the coming winter months and have been fighting for the high five- and low six-weight calves.
