Bob Rodenberger Sees Surge in Calf Market Prices

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger noted that the calf market has increased significantly due to recent rainfall, while feeder markets have remained stable, although runs have been down.

“In the last two weeks since before the rain, the calf market has jumped $100 to $150 per head, higher,” he said.

He said that it is a seller’s market so if anyone doesn’t have wheat, grass, or water to carry cattle through the winter, there are big incentives to take them to town.

“We are still killing a lot of cows,” he said. “Not near as many as we were a year ago at this time, but more than we were back in the summer. Even though the rain has helped, we are still culling cows.”

He continues to get calls from people with wheat, so the rain has brought the wheat up.

Despite the Thanksgiving holiday next week, Oklahoma City will still be selling cattle on Monday and Tuesday, and Rodenberger expects a good market. Apache will be closed next week. There will only be three more sales after Thanksgiving before they shut down for a couple of weeks.
