KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.
Rodenberger mentioned that the market was not seeing any weakness in calves or yearling market, and that the demand for meat was high, particularly from high-end restaurants, which continues to maintain the cattle market.
Numbers were about 1,000 less than last week, which makes this week’s sale closer to normal for the time of year. Significantly fewer cows were sold, and most of the calves were fully weaned and prepared to go on feed.
“When you can take a calf to town and get seventeen to eighteen hundred dollars for him, its hard not to take that money, because it is still a win-win,” Rodenberger said. “If you aren’t using some type of price protection, when you get ready to come off in May, you might give your margin back that you would get by putting them on wheat. I think that is one reason we are seeing some nice runs of cattle.”
Only one sale at each location remains before the new year: Monday, December 16 in Oklahoma City, and Thursday, December 19 in Apache.
