KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Monday’s Sale included the sale of a donated calf to benefit the All American Beef Battalion which featured a steak meal for attendees. Three hundred steaks were served during the event.

“We had an excellent market on Monday, and we did a lot of good for the veterans,” Rodenberger said. “Anything we can do to support or recognize our veterans is a good deal.”

The calf donated by the Clyde Runyan family was sold more than thirty times and raised $54,000 for the All American Beef Battalion that provides premium steak dinners to active-duty military members returning home or preparing to deploy.

Looking at the year in review, Rodenberger said that the year is ending with prices as high as he has ever seen them. Calves are bringing $1,700 to $1,900 and packer cattle are bringing $1.15 to $1.30 per pound.

“People bringing cull cows are saying that the salvage is bringing more than they what they paid for her young,” he noted. “Ninety days ago, they were worried about moving the meat, and now they are talking about how we don’t have enough meat to meet the demands. That is very positive for us down the road.”

The numbers at the Apache sale were better than expected, but Rodenberger still expects the shortage to reach the markets at some point due to a reduced cattle herd and high salvage values.

Sales for 2024 have concluded but will resume on January 6 in Oklahoma City and January 9 in Apache.

Bob thanked everyone who has a part in this year’s success, including buyers and sellers. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well.
