Superior Livestock’s Bellringer Video Auction is underway being broadcast from the Embassy Suites in downtown Oklahoma City and Superior Livestock President Danny Jones was on hand to tell Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays all about it.
“Prices continue to be strong,” Jones said. “It is the beginning of 2025, and numbers are down and the demand is certainly there. Beef is moving well, and we are excited for a great year.”
Bellringer was named because of its prominence early in the year and was originally heavily associated with the National Western Livestock Show, but now coincides with Cattlemen’s Congress.
More than 100,000 head will change hands over the three days of the sale taking place from today, January 8, through Friday, January 10, 2025.
“We are producing as much beef with fewer cattle, and we are doing that by making those cattle bigger,” Jones said. “We’ve moved up in our carcass weights and that has offset in a large part the lower numbers. Fortunately, the cost of feed is down some which has also facilitated that, so we have been able to supply a robust demand for beef through larger cattle. We know well that numbers are down, and we expect to start feeling the effects of that this year.”
More and more cattle producers are taking advantage of value-added programs, like Certified Natural, NHTC, G.A.P., and BeefCARE, to earn greater premiums on their cattle and Jones feels like those programs are well worth it for large-scale producers.
“When you put the kind of numbers together that we are able to here, and the supply and demand come together with price discovery at a large auction, buyers can find the numbers that they need to meet the commitments that they have,” Jones commented.
