KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.
Despite frigid temperatures on Monday, Rodenberger said that everyone who brought cattle, received good money for them. Some four-weight cattle brought $4.50, and some eight-weights brought $2.70.
“It was as crazy and high a market as I have seen,” he said. “Everybody was trying to buy cattle, so everyone who came made the right decision. The same thing happened at Apache when people were talking about snow.”
With snow on the ground, the sale at Apache moved 1,700 head while maintaining a good market with some seven-weight cattle brought $2.90.
“Normally, a snowstorm will cause the fat market to rally,” Rodenberger said. “We got that yesterday. The day before, it was down $3.00 and yesterday it was up $4.00.”
On Wednesday, some exceptional 850 lb. cattle sold on a video auction for $2.75, and Rodenberger can’t remember ever selling cattle five months in advance that high before.
“It’s been fun since Monday,” he said. “People are excited.”
With several inches of snow on the ground and the moisture its melt will create, Rodenberger doesn’t have high expectations for the number of cattle that will be sold early next week.
